Category: Live gigs

I absolutely love seeing my favourite bands live, and despite my ripe old age I still go to see them.
There is no doubt that I am one of the oldest people at most of the gigs I go to as I have always tried to keep in touch with music trends and new bands.

It has been helpful having 2 of my kids later in life but I still find my own.

I realised that I had an icloud full of clips going back years, so I am using them to create little videos of the events and post them on my youtube channel, and blog and hopefully I will help these bands find some new fans

  • An Unforgettable Night: Faithless in Bristol’s Unique Venue

An Unforgettable Night: Faithless in Bristol’s Unique Venue

I doubt anyone has not heard of Faithless, they revolutionised music in the early 90s with tracks like Insomnia and God is a Dj.

I’ve seen them a few times over the years and they are always awesome but this gig was different. Their iconic lead sing Maxi Jazz died a few years ago, so it was unclear how the band would present itself without him.

This gig took place in an enormous warehouse in Bristol called the Document, very odd name for a venue and doesn’t reflect it’s personality at all, maybe Underground might have helped us know what to expect !

This gig took place in November 24. It was a great show, with the band tastefully using images of Maxi during key tracks and also introducing new ideas to their set, with cover versions of other bands classics which turned it into another amazing night of energy and emotions.

As you can see from the video, it was packed and everyone was having a fantastic time including my pals Pete and Sue who look like people from Top of hte Pops !

Unforgettable Utah Saints Moments at Shineon Festival in Minehead

For those of you that don’t know, Shineon is a legendary gathering of Indy music fans at the Butlins resort in Minehead, Somerset.

It is wall to wall live bands for 3 days spread across the various venues within the holiday resort. People range from 20 year olds that grew up with Oasis loving parents to oldies like me that haven’t grown up.

Drinking and partying is a big part of the proceedings and people that arrive bright eyed and bushy tailed on Friday night look a lot rougher by Monday morning, but that’s life and we love it. I will be posting a few more gig stories from there in the future.

So these are snippets from the legendary 90’s dj duo the Utah Saints, who pioneered remixing classic songs with the new wave of rave and electronic music that was hitting the streets in 1991. I hope you go and check out some of their other tunes after this.

Bear in mind that this gig was going on at about 3pm on a wet Saturday afternoon, it really helped sort out those hangovers, but not for everyone as you can see !!

  • Everyone You Know @ Thekla

    Everyone You Know @ Thekla

Sign illuminating the phrase 'Everyone You Know' in front of a bar stocked with various bottles and cans of beverages.

We went to these young guys at Thekla in Bristol, January 2024.

Thekla is an amazing venue, it is an old ship which is moored in the centre of Bristol for year. Someone many years ago stripped out the engines and turned into an amazing venue. Admittedly is a labrynth of steps, and every trip to the toilet seems to involve a different route back, but that is the wonder of the venue.

On top of that, the steam from all these human beings seems to make all the metal work wet, so it can be a bit of a slippery experience as well !

I love music with energy and innovation, so I might be 65 years old but I haven’t lost my lust for life. I have friends who’s musical tastes matured with them, but I wasn’t one of them so have really enjoyed the music trends as they have developed over my life time.

We came across this band about 18 months ago. Working class lads from London who have created a unique sound which involves some excellent mixing of drum and bass into songs with great lyrics about this urban generation.

At the gig, they announced it was their final tour as the economics of bands depending on youtube, Apple and Spotify for their income meant they were struggling to continue, which is desperately sad and I hope they survive and thrive. I’m not sure why they haven’t become massive to be honest, my daughter thinks it’s because they float across a number of music genres so are getting missed.

As evidence of their credibility, the lad that was serving on the merch stand was also a member of the band, so he would run up on stage, do his vocals, and head back to the merch stand again !

There are a few guest appearances and voices from me, Wooksie and youngest daughter, we love to sing along – sadly for you !
